Scream Unheard

Syncopation (Excerpt)

Karl: I liked Martin. But he was overconfident. That was his problem. And quick to criticize. He’d jump on any bandwagon even if it was on its way off a cliff. And he did go off a cliff in the end. (Stands up. Mimes a vehicle going off a cliff). Didn’t know his limitations. Not everything is possible. (Sits down again).

…

Karl: He lacked control.

Lincoln: He hardly put a foot wrong.

Celine: He sounds like an interesting chap. I wonder what happened to him.

Lincoln: He was a victim of circumstance.

Karl: He dug his own grave.

Celine: Did he have an eye for the ladies?
Lincoln: He never married.

Karl: He…

Lincoln: (Threateningly) Maybe you should just shut up about him.

Karl: I never liked him anyway.

Celine: He was a complicated character, I’m sure.

(There’s a groan and Karl and Lincoln look at each other warily.)

Celine: (To Lincoln). What did you say?

Lincoln: It wasn’t me. I didn’t say a word. It must have been him (gestures to Karl).

Karl: (Laughs heartily) The idea.

(Another groan. Louder).

Celine: (To Karl). What?

Karl: I’ll go to the bathroom.

Celine: Ah, yes.

(Karl exits room. There’s a scream. Then silence. He returns.)

Celine:(To Karl). Excuse me?

Lincoln:(Looks worried).

Karl: Whoo! Feel better after that. Thought I was going to burst.
